Chapter 11 - The Empty Bed

The fluorescent lights of the pediatric hospital’s third-floor recovery ward buzzed with a sterile, maddening persistence. Clara burst through the double doors, her chest heaving, followed closely by Elena and Marcus. The hospital room was completely empty. The sheets on the child's bed were thrown back, rumpled and cold, and a small, green plastic toy dinosaur lay abandoned on the floor beside the nightstand.
An exhausted-looking nurse hurried down the hallway toward them, her identification badge swinging wildly from her lanyard.
"Mrs. Sterling! Thank goodness you're here," the nurse panted, stopping outside the room. "I only stepped away for five minutes to file the morning intake charts at the nurses' station."
Clara grabbed the nurse’s arm, her fingers digging in with desperate urgency. "Where is he? Who took him?"
"A man," the nurse said, her eyes wide with fear. "He wore a federal investigator's jacket and flashed an ID badge. He told me he had emergency authorization from Agent Miller to transfer the child to a secure off-site medical facility for protection."
Elena stepped forward, her face turning pale. "Agent Miller didn't authorize any transfer. We were with her the entire morning at the corporate garage."
"That means Richard had an accomplice inside the federal task force," Marcus realized aloud, slamming his hand against the doorframe in frustration. "Someone who had access to the security protocols and knew Leo was staying at this hospital under your name."
Clara stared at the empty bed, feeling a cold, suffocating dread wash over her soul. All the corporate battles, the frozen vaults, the legal documents—none of it mattered anymore. They could take the mansion, the company, the money, and the power. But they couldn't take Leo.
"Did anyone see which way they went?" Clara asked, her voice dangerously calm, devoid of all panic, replaced by a terrifying, focused resolve.
"The security cameras in the underground parking bay," the nurse stammered, pulling a tablet from her pocket and tapping the screen. "They drove off in a black unmarked van heading toward the old industrial district by the harbor."
Elena pulled out her phone, dialing Agent Miller’s direct line with shaking fingers. "Miller? We have a code red. Leo has been abducted from the hospital by an accomplice posing as a federal agent. They're heading toward the south harbor industrial zone."
"I'm dispatching every available unit to the harbor right now," Agent Miller’s voice crackled through the speaker, crisp and urgent. "Do not engage them on your own. Wait for backup."
Clara didn't wait for backup. She turned on her heel and sprinted back down the hallway toward the elevators, ignoring Elena and Marcus calling out her name. She couldn't wait for the system to work. She had played by the rules, trusted the legal process, and nearly lost everything. Now, it was time to settle the score on her own terms.

As the elevator doors slid open to the ground floor, Clara stepped out into the lobby, only to find herself face-to-face with a familiar, terrifying figure blocking the exit. It wasn't an accomplice. It was Victoria Sterling, who had somehow managed to post emergency bail through an offshore account before dawn, standing calmly in the center of the marble floor with a chilling, triumphant smile on her face.
