Chapter 1 - The Marble Floor

The heavy crystal chandelier above the dining room cast a cold, blinding light across the polished white marble. Leo stood frozen in his light blue button-down shirt, his small shoulders trembling as quiet tears traced paths down his flushed cheeks. Beside his tiny sneakers, a porcelain plate lay shattered, the expensive roast chicken and honey-glazed carrots smeared across the pristine floor. Victoria Sterling, her silver hair coiled into a severe, immaculate updo, stood over the seven-year-old boy. Her black top seemed to absorb the light, matching the absolute chill in her dark eyes.

"Illegitimate children eat on the floor," Victoria said firmly, her voice carrying effortlessly across the vast, silent room where distant relatives and terrified family attorneys watched from the mahogany dining table.

Clara dropped her fork, the silver clattering loudly against her porcelain plate. She pushed her chair back so hard it scraped against the floorboards. In a blur of cream-colored fabric, she sprinted across the expansive room, dropping violently to her knees on the hard marble. She wrapped her arms around Leo, pulling his small body against her chest to shield him from the cruel stares.

"Don’t touch my son," Clara said sharply, her voice shaking with a fierce, protective maternal rage that cut through the stifling tension of the hall.

Before Clara could lift the boy into her arms, Richard stood up angrily at the head of the dining table. His face was mottled with fury, his white button-down shirt straining slightly at the chest. He glared down at Clara and the trembling child, his patience entirely evaporated.

"You’re embarrassing this family!" Richard shouted angrily, pointing a trembling finger at Clara while stepping forward to shield his mother, Victoria, from the sudden disruption.

Clara stood up slowly, her hands firmly holding Leo against her hip. She looked past Richard, locking her gaze directly onto Victoria’s cold, unyielding face. The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

"This mansion belongs to Noah and me. So does the company," Clara said coldly, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that commanded the entire room. "Now tell me who should leave."

Victoria’s expression faltered for a fraction of a second before a slow, chilling smile touched the corners of her mouth.
