Chapter 10 - The Underground Terminal

The subterranean parking garage of Sterling Enterprises was cold, damp, and lit by flickering fluorescent tubes that hummed an annoying, high-pitched tune. Elena’s sedan screeched to a halt near pillar forty-two, right beside Richard’s silver luxury SUV. The driver's side door of Richard's vehicle was open, and a heavy black cable trailed from the interior down into a floor-level utility access panel connected directly to the corporate mainframe.

Elena killed the engine, and the three of them stepped out cautiously into the echoing concrete space, their footsteps crunching on tiny bits of gravel.

"Spread out," Marcus whispered, drawing his phone to record everything as legal evidence. "He’s cornered, which makes him dangerous."

Clara moved silently toward the rear of the SUV, her eyes scanning the dark shadows between the concrete pillars. The hum of the mainframe cooling fans upstairs vibrated through the floor beneath her feet. As she rounded the corner of the concrete barrier, she spotted Richard sitting inside his vehicle, frantically typing on a laptop screen while a progress bar on the display ticked slowly toward ninety-eight percent.

"It’s over, Richard," Clara said, her voice cutting sharply through the hum of the garage.

Richard froze. He slowly turned his head, his face pale, sweat beading on his forehead. He wasn't wearing his clean white button-down shirt anymore; he wore a rumpled gray hoodie, looking every bit like a desperate criminal on the run.

"Don't take another step, Clara!" Richard snapped, reaching into his jacket pocket and pulling out a small, metallic flash drive that served as the manual override master key. "If you take one more step closer, I’ll hit format on this drive, and twenty years of medical research vanishes into the digital ether. The company goes under, nobody gets a dime, and we all burn together!"

Elena stepped out from behind a pillar, her expression ice-cold. "You think destroying the company hurts us, Richard? It destroys you too. You lose your freedom, your lifestyle, your name. You're already dead to the world; don't make your sentence any worse."

Richard laughed hysterically, his eyes wild and erratic. "You don't understand, Elena! Mother promised me that if I delivered the patent data to Apex Pharma, their offshore shell company would smuggle me out of the country by midnight! I’m already gone!"

Marcus lunged forward from the side, trying to tackle Richard through the open window, but Richard reacted with lightning speed, slamming his fist onto the laptop keyboard and hitting the enter key just as Marcus grabbed his collar.

The progress bar on the screen flashed red, reading: FORMAT COMPLETE. DATA WIPED.

Richard grinned maniacally as Marcus pulled him out of the vehicle and threw him hard against the concrete floor. "You're too late! The data is gone!"

Clara walked slowly toward the glowing laptop screen, ignoring Richard's frantic laughter. She looked down at the terminal interface, noticing a tiny detail that Richard, in his blind panic, had completely overlooked.

"You really are your mother's son, Richard," Clara said quietly, a faint smile touching her lips. "So arrogant, you never check the backup server."

Richard’s laughter instantly died in his throat. He scrambled up onto his knees, staring at the screen as Clara reached down and clicked a hidden desktop icon labeled Redundancy Protocol Alpha.

On the screen, a secondary progress bar instantly appeared, showing the file transfer running smoothly at one hundred percent to a secure, federal-encrypted cloud vault.

"No," Richard whispered, collapsing back against the concrete wall as the heavy footsteps of approaching security guards and federal agents echoed down the ramp.

Before the agents could slap the cuffs on Richard, a sharp, piercing ringtone cut through the garage. Clara pulled her phone from her pocket and saw an unknown caller ID with a local area code. She swiped to answer, pressing the device to her ear.

"Mrs. Sterling?" a panicked voice asked on the other end. "This is the head nurse at the city pediatric hospital. You need to get down here immediately. Leo has been taken."
