Chapter 13 - The Warehouse at Pier 4

The salt air of the south harbor hung heavy and thick, carrying the metallic scent of rust, diesel fuel, and rotting kelp. Agent Miller’s tactical vehicle screeched to a halt outside Warehouse 4, a dilapidated corrugated metal structure sitting at the edge of a abandoned pier where the dark waves of the Atlantic crashed violently against the rotting wooden pilings.
Clara flung her door open before the vehicle had even fully stopped, sprinting toward the rusted metal sliding door of the warehouse. Elena and Marcus were right behind her, their breath pluming in the cold morning air.
"Stay behind me," Agent Miller ordered, drawing her service weapon and signaling two tactical officers to breach the side access door.
With a sharp kick, the side door flew open, and the officers flooded into the cavernous, dimly lit interior. Clara didn't wait for the all-clear. She ducked past the officers and stepped into the sprawling, shadows-filled space.
In the center of the warehouse, beneath a flickering overhead work light, sat a small wooden chair. Bound securely to the chair with heavy zip-ties was seven-year-old Leo, his light blue button-down shirt wrinkled and stained with soot. A piece of gray duct tape was pressed firmly over his mouth, and his tear-filled eyes widened in sheer terror as he saw Clara rush toward him.
"Leo!" Clara cried out, dropping to her knees beside the chair. She frantically tore the tape from his mouth and began working her fingernails under the thick plastic zip-ties securing his wrists.
"Mommy!" Leo sobbed, throwing his small arms around Clara’s neck the moment his hands were free, burying his face in her shoulder.
"I've got you, baby. I've got you, I'm right here," Clara whispered, rocking him back and forth as hot tears streamed down her own cheeks.
Suddenly, a loud metallic click echoed from the upper catwalk above them.
Everyone froze. Elena whipped her head upward, pointing a finger toward the shadows.
Standing on the rusted metal walkway thirty feet above the warehouse floor was Richard. He looked completely unhinged, his hair matted, holding a heavy industrial wrench in one hand and a detonator switch in the other. He stared down at them with a wild, desperate grin.
"End of the line!" Richard shouted, his voice echoing off the tin walls. "If I can't have the empire, nobody gets anything! I’ve rigged the structural support pillars with high-yield demolition charges! One click, and this whole pier goes into the bay!"
Agent Miller slowly raised her service weapon, aiming up at the catwalk. "Drop the detonator, Richard! You are surrounded by federal agents! There’s nowhere to run!"
May you like
"I'm not running anywhere!" Richard screamed, his finger tightening over the red button on the remote control. "Clara ruined my life! My mother is in handcuffs! You took everything fr
