Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession

The guest wing of the Sterling mansion was quiet, save for the distant sound of federal investigators rummaging through filing cabinets in the downstairs study. Clara sat on the edge of the plush velvet bed, gently running her fingers through Leo’s short brown hair until the exhausted boy finally drifted off to sleep, his tear-streaked face resting peacefully against the floral pillowcase.

The door creaked open, and a tall figure slipped into the dimly lit room. It was Richard, his white button-down shirt wrinkled and stained with spilled coffee, his tie missing entirely. He looked older, smaller, stripped of the arrogant armor that usually defined him.

"They took the keys to my car, Clara," Richard whispered, his voice cracking slightly. He leaned against the doorframe, unable to meet her eyes. "They said everything is tied up in receivership. Mother is locked in her suite with her personal physician, refusing to speak to anyone."

Clara stood up slowly, making sure not to wake Leo. She walked over to the window, looking out over the sprawling, manicured gardens illuminated by moonlight. She didn't turn to face her husband.

"You reap what you sow, Richard," she said softly. "For years, you watched your mother humiliate anyone who didn't fit her narrow definition of perfection. You stayed silent when she destroyed lives, because as long as your name was on the check, nothing else mattered."

Richard took a hesitant step into the room, his hands trembling as he shoved them into his pockets. "I didn't know the extent of it, Clara. Mother handled the financials. I was just the public face, the CEO in title only. You have to believe me."

Clara finally turned around, her eyes flashing with a cold, fierce intensity that made Richard flinch. "Stop lying, Richard. It's pathetic. I found the ledger in your home office safe six months ago. The one where you personally signed off on the offshore transfers to hide the embezzlement funds from the audit."

Richard’s breath hitched. He staggered backward, his shoulder hitting the wall with a dull thud. The color drained entirely from his face.

"You... you knew?" he whispered, horror dawning in his eyes.

"I knew everything," Clara said, stepping closer to him until she was invading his personal space. "I stayed because of Leo. I wanted him to know his father, foolishly hoping some piece of humanity might still exist beneath that expensive shirt and those hollow ambitions. But tonight, watching your mother shove a seven-year-old child onto a marble floor like garbage, I realized the rot goes all the way to the root."

Richard dropped his head into his hands, a pathetic, ragged sob escaping his throat. "If the federal prosecutors find that ledger, I’ll spend twenty years in a maximum-security prison. Clara, please. You have influence with the restructuring team. You can help me bury it."

Clara looked at her husband with absolute pity, a far more devastating emotion than anger. She reached into the pocket of her cream-colored dress and pulled out a small, heavy silver flash drive, holding it up where the moonlight caught the metallic casing.

"You're asking the wrong person for a favor," Clara said quietly. "Because this flash drive isn't going to the restructuring team."

May you like

Richard lunged forward with a desperate, frantic cry, trying to snatch the drive from her hand, but the bedroom door flew open with a loud bang, revealing two federal agents standing in the hallway with their flashlights drawn.
