Chapter 3 - The Frozen Vaults

The dining room descended into a chaotic hush. The wealthy relatives who had moments ago watched Clara and Leo with amused disdain now sat upright, their eyes darting nervously toward Victoria and Richard. The frozen accounts of Sterling Enterprises meant more than a temporary inconvenience; it meant payroll, supplier contracts, and international shipments were instantly halted.
"What do you mean, frozen?" Richard demanded, abandoning his attempt to intimidate Clara. He rushed toward Mr. Vance, snatching the tablet from the lawyer's trembling hands. The bright screen reflected stark, red warning text from the Federal Trade Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. "This has to be a clerical error. Call the bank president immediately!"
Victoria remained seated at the head of the table, though her composure was visibly fracturing. Her manicured fingers dug into the mahogany wood of the armrest until her knuckles turned white. She slowly turned her head to look at Clara, who was still standing calmly near the spilled plate of food, her young son safely tucked against her shoulder.
"You did this," Victoria whispered, the accusation dripping with venom. "You planned this childish stunt to draw attention away from your own illegitimacy, while your conspirators inside the regulatory agencies executed a hostile ambush."
Clara let out a quiet, humorless laugh. "Give me some credit, Victoria. I don’t need to conspire with federal agencies to watch a corrupt empire collapse under its own weight. You spent thirty years cooking the books, burying liabilities under shell companies, and treating human beings like trash on a marble floor. Gravity finally caught up."
Richard spun around, his face dark with fury, stepping aggressively toward Clara. "Shut your mouth! You are still my wife, and you will not speak to my mother that way in this house!"
"Not for much longer, Richard," Clara replied, her voice steady and chillingly prophetic.
Before Richard could raise his voice again, the heavy oak double doors of the mansion burst open. Three federal agents in dark suits strode into the foyer, led by a stern-faced woman holding a thick leather folder. The room fell into an absolute, breathless silence. All eyes shifted from Clara to the federal badge held high in the center of the room.
"Richard Sterling? Victoria Sterling?" the lead agent announced, her voice echoing off the marble walls. "You are both being served with a federal subpoena and a warrant for asset forfeiture related to corporate fraud, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice."
Victoria slowly stood up, her regal posture finally buckling under the heavy weight of reality. She looked at the agents, then back at Clara, whose expression remained completely impassive.
"This is an outrage," Victoria stammered, though her voice lacked its usual commanding authority. "We demand to speak to the Attorney General. We are untouchable!"
Clara adjusted Leo in her arms, turning toward the grand staircase to leave the disaster behind. She paused at the bottom step, looking back one last time.
"Nobody is untouchable, Victoria," Clara said softly. "Especially those who build their thrones on broken glass."

As the federal agents closed in around Richard and Victoria, snapping handcuffs onto the patriarch's wrists, Mr. Vance frantically grabbed his briefcase and tried to slip out the side exit, only to find his path blocked by a fourth agent standing quietly in the shadows.
