Chapter 5 - The Redacted File

The flash drive clattered against the hardwood floor as Richard stumbled back, caught mid-motion by the federal agents who quickly pinned his arms behind his back. The lead agent, Agent Miller, stepped into the room, her eyes sharp and analytical as she scanned the scene.

"Mr. Sterling, you are violating the terms of your release by attempting to intimidate a witness," Agent Miller stated coldly, her voice echoing in the quiet bedroom. She glanced down at the metallic drive glinting on the floor, then looked up at Clara. "Is that what I think it is, Mrs. Sterling?"

Clara stepped back, giving the agent a clear path to retrieve the evidence. "It’s the complete, unredacted financial ledger for Sterling Enterprises, detailing every offshore account, forged signature, and illicit asset transfer orchestrated by Victoria and Richard Sterling over the past decade."

Richard struggled against the agents, his face turning crimson with rage and pure panic. "She’s lying! That’s stolen property! She planted that in my office to frame us!"

"Shut up, Richard," Agent Miller ordered sharply, picking up the flash drive and slipping it into an evidence bag. She turned back to Clara, her expression softening just a fraction. "We’ve been chasing this exact encryption key for three years. How did you get it?"

"My father was the chief compliance officer at Sterling Enterprises before Victoria forced him out twenty years ago under fabricated charges," Clara explained calmly, her voice steady despite the emotional weight of the memory. "Before he died, he spent his final months piecing together the fraud. He gave me the keys to his digital archives, telling me to use them only when the Sterling family finally crossed a line they couldn't walk back from."

Agent Miller nodded slowly, signaling the other agents to haul Richard out of the room. "Your father was a brave man, Mrs. Sterling. This evidence changes everything. Your husband and mother-in-law aren't just facing asset forfeiture anymore; they're looking at federal conspiracy charges with a mandatory minimum of fifteen years."

As the agents dragged Richard out into the hallway, his desperate shouting faded down the grand staircase, leaving the guest room in a heavy, echoing silence. Clara walked back to the bed and sat down gently, watching Leo continue to sleep peacefully, untouched by the storm swirling around them.

The door remained open, and a tall silhouette stepped into the doorway. It wasn't an agent. It was Marcus Sterling, Victoria’s estranged younger brother, who had been exiled from the family twenty-five years ago for refusing to participate in the company's shady dealings. He looked remarkably like Richard, but his eyes carried warmth and intelligence rather than arrogance.

"You finally did it, Clara," Marcus said softly, leaning against the doorframe. "You brought down the house."

Clara looked up, exhaustion finally creeping into her expression. "It’s not over yet, Marcus. Victoria still has one card left to play. She’s hiding something in the master vault, something she protects even more fiercely than the money."

Marcus’s expression hardened, a dark shadow crossing his face. "She’s not hiding money in that vault, Clara. She’s hiding the truth about what happened to your father."
