Chapter 6 - The Master Vault

The heavy oak door of the master suite remained firmly locked, but Marcus produced a heavy iron key from his coat pocket, sliding it into the intricate brass keyhole with practiced familiarity. The lock clicked open with a deep, echoing thud. Clara followed him into the cavernous room, where the air smelled faintly of aged parchment, expensive perfume, and underlying decay.

"Victoria hasn't let anyone into this room in decades," Marcus whispered, his hand resting on the grip of a heavy mahogany desk. "When our father died, she inherited the estate, but she immediately stripped all references to our family history out of the archives. She wanted everyone to believe the Sterling empire began and ended with her."

Clara walked over to the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lining the far wall. She traced her fingers along the spine of a leather-bound journal, noticing a subtle misalignment in the wooden paneling behind it. "Marcus, look at this. The bookshelf isn't just furniture; it’s a sliding door."

Marcus hurried over, pressing his weight against the carved wooden pillar. With a metallic groan of gears turning for the first time in twenty years, the massive bookshelf swung inward, revealing a dark, concrete-reinforced alcove illuminated only by the pale moonlight streaming through the high, barred window. In the center of the room sat a heavy steel safe, its digital keypad blinking with a faint red standby light.

"The combination," Marcus murmured, scratching his head. "Mother changed it after I was cast out. We’ll never guess the code without spending hours cracking the motherboard."

"We don't need to guess," Clara said quietly, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a small, dog-eared photograph she had recovered from her late father’s belongings. It showed a younger Victoria standing proudly beside a cornerstone plaque dated October 14, 1985—the day the original Sterling headquarters was founded.

Marcus stared at the date, a grim understanding dawning on his face. "The founding date. Try 10-14-85."

Clara stepped up to the keypad and punched in the numbers, followed by the pound sign. With a heavy, satisfying mechanical clunk, the massive steel door of the safe swung open, releasing a rush of stagnant air.

Inside the safe, there were no stacks of cash or illegal bearer bonds. Instead, the shelves were stacked neatly with old cassette tapes, medical files, and a thick stack of legal documents bearing red "CONFIDENTIAL" stamps.

Clara reached inside and pulled out the top medical file, opening the aged paper cover. Her breath caught in her throat as she read the bold header: Sterling, Leo – Birth Certificate and Adoption Records.

Marcus peered over her shoulder, his eyes widening in absolute shock as he read the name listed as the biological mother on the document.

"Clara... this isn't possible," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. "Leo isn't your adopted nephew. According to these files... Leo is Richard and Victoria’s legal grandson, but his biological mother isn't you."

Before Clara could process the horrific implications of the document, the security monitor on the desk flickered to life, showing Agent Miller standing in the hallway downstairs, frantically waving her arms at the security camera and shouting for Clara to come down immediately.
