Chapter 9: Digging Deeper into the Past

The following morning dawned gray and overcast, casting a somber mood over the suburban neighborhood. The police tape had been removed from the front porch, but two unmarked cruisers maintained a discreet vigil parked down the street at Arthur Sterling’s explicit instruction through legal channels—though now, the police presence was there to protect Marcus and Elena, not restrict them.
Inside the kitchen, Marcus brewed a fresh pot of coffee while reviewing digital scans of the ledger on his laptop. Every page represented a breadcrumb left behind by Carter, a meticulous paper trail designed to survive even if the man himself did not. Beside him sat a printed family tree dating back three generations, highlighting the web of beneficiaries tied to the Sterling Foundation.
Elena walked in, carrying Leo and Maya’s school bags. School had been canceled for the day for safety reasons, and the children were playing quietly in the adjacent den. "Miller called," Elena said, taking a cup of coffee from Marcus. "They traced the offshore accounts from Carter’s documents. The money trail leads directly to a shell corporation registered in Delaware under a pseudonym."
"And the name on the registration?" Marcus asked, looking up from his screen.
"Arthur Sterling," Elena replied grimly. "Along with two other members of the board who haven't been publicly active in years. Miller is drafting search warrants for their corporate headquarters downtown, but he warned us that Arthur’s legal team is already mobilizing to block the seizure."
"They're going to try to scrub the servers before the warrants can be served," Marcus realized instantly, closing his laptop with a sharp snap. "Corporate entities of that size have automated data-deletion protocols triggered by legal threats."

"Exactly," Elena agreed, her eyes locking onto his with fierce determination. "Which means we can't wait for the slow wheels of justice to turn. Carter left those physical ledgers in the house for a reason. There has to be a physical master key or a backup drive hidden somewhere else in that study."
Marcus nodded slowly. They needed to go back into the dark room, examine every inch of the mahogany bookshelves, and find whatever physical proof remained before Arthur’s lawyers managed to legally dismantle the investigation from the outside. The house of whispers was ready to give up its final, most dangerous secret.
