Chapter 4: Unwelcome Visitors

The sound of footsteps crunching purposefully up the gravel walkway sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through the study. Marcus shoved the manila envelope and the leather ledger back into the hidden compartment, sliding the wooden panel shut just as the front door handle jiggled. He stood up quickly, brushing the dust from his trousers and smoothing his blue shirt.
"Elena, take the kids through the utility room exit into the backyard," Marcus commanded in a tense, urgent whisper. "Go to the neighbor's house right now and call the police."
"No, I'm not leaving you here," Elena protested, her voice rising in panic as she grabbed his arm.
"You have to," Marcus insisted, his grip firm on her shoulders as he looked directly into her eyes. "If those people are outside, they are looking for these documents. If they find us together, the kids are in danger. Go!"
Reluctantly, Elena nodded, sprinting down the hallway toward the kitchen where Leo and Maya waited. Marcus heard the heavy metal door of the utility room open and close, followed by the muffled sound of hurried footsteps on the grass outside. He was entirely alone in the house now, standing in the dim light of the hallway with the weight of a decade-old conspiracy resting squarely on his shoulders.
A heavy knock echoed against the front door, followed immediately by the sound of a key turning in the lock. The brass knob twisted, and the door swung open wide. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal overcoat stepped across the threshold. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was utterly devoid of warmth. It was Arthur Sterling, Elena and Carter’s estranged uncle, a man who supposedly lived three hundred miles away and hadn't set foot in this house since the funeral arrangements were abandoned ten years ago.
"Marcus," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying an icy composure that chilled the air. "I see you found the study. Family curiosity is such a dangerous trait."
May you like
Marcus stood his ground near the hallway table, keeping his body positioned squarely in front of the hidden compartment to block Arthur’s view. "You shouldn't be here, Arthur. The police are already on their way."
Arthur offered a thin, humorless smile, taking a slow step forward on the hardwood floor. "Let's not play games, my boy. Carter thought he could outsmart us all with a few pieces of paper. Hand over the ledger, and no one else in this family has to suffer the same fate he did."
