Chapter 2: Echoes Behind the Double Doors

The phone line went dead with a hollow click, leaving only the sound of Elena’s ragged breathing in the dim hallway. She dropped her hand slowly, the cell phone slipping from her numb fingers and clattering against the hardwood floor. Marcus did not move. He kept Leo and Maya pressed safely against his body, his eyes locked onto Elena’s pale, sweat-slicked face. The question hung in the air like poison. A death certificate for Carter. But Carter had vanished ten years ago under mysterious circumstances, officially declared a missing person presumed dead, though no body had ever been recovered.
"Who was that, Elena?" Marcus asked, his voice low, steady, and laden with a quiet dread that frightened the children more than the shouting had.
Elena swallowed hard, her mouth opening, but no words came out. Instead, she pointed a trembling finger toward the framed photograph resting on the hallway table. It was an old family portrait taken a summer before the tragedy, showing a smiling Carter standing right where Marcus was now standing. The glass over Carter’s face had been cracked from top to bottom during the earlier scuffle.
"We need to get the kids out of here," Marcus said, his protective instincts overriding every other thought. He ushered Leo and Maya toward the kitchen at the opposite end of the house, away from the ominous double doors. Leo looked back once, his young mind struggling to comprehend the heavy adult secrets weighing down the household.
Once the children were safely seated at the kitchen island with a box of crackers to calm their nerves, Marcus turned back to find Elena standing at the edge of the hallway. She had recovered a sliver of her composure, though her eyes remained haunted.

"I didn't open the study," Elena whispered defensively, wrapping her arms around her grey-collared shirt as if trying to hold herself together. "Maya was playing near the baseboard, and the paneling gave way. There's a hidden compartment, Marcus. Carter didn't just disappear. Someone made him disappear, and they think he left a paper trail."
Marcus stared at the dark entryway, the realization dawning on him with brutal clarity. The house was hiding secrets within its very walls, and the phone call proved that whoever was watching them knew the truth was about to surface. They had precious little time to figure out what Carter had left behind before whoever was on the other end of that line arrived to reclaim it.
