Chapter 12: Executing the Escape Plan

Time was measured in agonizing heartbeats as Marcus and Elena moved through the house with military precision. Marcus scooped up Maya while taking Leo firmly by the hand, guiding them out through the rear utility door into the overgrown backyard where Detective Miller’s two undercover backup officers were stationed in an unmarked sedan.

Officer Vance, a seasoned detective in plainclothes, stepped out of the vehicle immediately, his hand resting on his weapon as he assessed their frantic state. "What's wrong? What happened?" Vance asked sharply.

"They threatened the gas lines," Marcus said breathlessly, bundling the children safely into the back seat of the sedan alongside Elena, who clutched the heavy fireproof lockbox against her chest like a shield. "Arthur's people are watching the house. They gave us an ultimatum: bring the lockbox to the old train depot by noon, or the house goes up."

Vance’s face darkened with immediate anger and professional resolve. "Get down on the floor of the car with the kids, Elena. We're getting you out of here right now." He turned to his partner in the driver's seat, barking orders into his radio. "Call bomb squad and fire dispatch to secure the residential block immediately. I'm escorting this family to the downtown precinct."

As the sedan peeled away from the curb, tires screeching against the asphalt, Marcus looked back through the rear window. The suburban home looked peaceful and ordinary under the gray autumn sky, hiding the deadly confrontation that had just unfolded within its walls. He knew the threat at the train depot was a trap designed to ambush whoever brought the evidence, but it was a trap they had no choice but to spring on their own terms.

Inside the car, Leo buried his face in Elena’s shoulder, whimpering softly. Elena stroked his hair, whispering gentle reassurances while her eyes remained fixed on the lockbox resting on her lap. The cryptographic key inside was their only ticket to freedom, but using it meant walking straight into the lion's den.
