Chapter 3: The Hidden Compartment

The hallway air grew noticeably colder as Marcus and Elena approached the partially opened double doors of the study. The room beyond was draped in dust covers and shadows, smelling faintly of old paper and neglected memories. Marcus motioned for Elena to stay back while he pushed the heavy mahogany door open just enough to step inside. The floorboards creaked under his shoes, a sharp sound in the otherwise tomb-like quiet of the abandoned space.
Along the base of the bookshelf, where the antique wainscoting met the floor, a wooden panel had been forced inward. It was the loose board Leo had inadvertently exposed while playing with his sister. Marcus knelt down, ignoring the dust that coated his maroon blazer, and slid his fingers into the narrow gap. With a soft click, a spring-loaded latch gave way, revealing a shallow cavity carved directly into the structural foundation of the house.
Inside the compartment sat a small, leather-bound ledger and a heavy manila envelope tied with faded red twine. Marcus’s heart hammered against his ribs as he reached in and pulled the items out. The leather cover of the ledger was cold and dry, embossed with initials in tarnished gold leaf: C.V.
"Is that it?" Elena asked softly from the doorway, her voice tight with anxiety as she clutched her arms. "Did you find the papers they were asking about?"
Marcus untied the red twine and opened the manila envelope. Inside lay a stack of legal documents, bank statements, and a crisp, official-looking certificate with a raised government seal. He unfolded the top document under the dim light filtering through the hallway. His breath hitched. It was indeed a death certificate, dated two days after Carter’s disappearance a decade ago. But the name listed on the document wasn't Carter. It was a completely different identity, bearing a photograph of a man who looked remarkably like Marcus himself.
"This doesn't make any sense," Marcus muttered, flipping through the financial ledgers. The pages were filled with meticulous handwritten notes detailing massive money transfers originating from a corporate trust fund controlled by an unknown benefactor.

"Carter wasn't running away," Elena said, stepping into the room and looking over Marcus's shoulder at the papers. "He was investigating someone. Someone in our own family."
Before they could examine the rest of the documents, a sharp sound echoed from the front of the house—the distinct crunch of gravel in the driveway, followed by the heavy thud of a car door slamming shut. Time had run out.
