Chapter 11: The Ultimate Ultimatum

Elena snatched the phone from her pocket without looking at the caller ID, expecting it to be Detective Miller with an update. Instead, an unfamiliar, synthesized voice echoed through the speaker, cold and metallic.

"Mrs. Sterling, I suggest you put down the lockbox and walk out of the study immediately," the voice commanded.

Elena froze, her blood running cold. "Who is this?"

"Someone who is currently standing at the end of your driveway with a thermal imaging scope pointed right at your backs," the caller replied smoothly. "Arthur sends his regards. You have two minutes to leave the house and surrender the contents of that box, or the gas line leading into your kitchen will be remotely triggered. Your children are eating breakfast right now, aren't they?"

Pure, unadulterated terror paralyzed Elena for a single, agonizing second before maternal instinct overrode all fear. "Don't touch them!" she screamed into the phone, turning frantically toward Marcus. "They have the kids! They're threatening the house!"

Marcus snatched the phone from her hand, his face pale with rage and adrenaline. "Listen to me, you coward," Marcus barked into the speaker. "If you harm a single hair on those children's heads, I will personally ensure that every encrypted file goes public within five seconds. We have the cryptographic key, and it's already backed up to an off-site server!"

It was a desperate bluff, but it hit its mark. There was a tense pause on the other end of the line before the caller spoke again, his voice dropping its casual arrogance. "You think you're very clever, Marcus. But you're dealing with professionals. You have until noon to bring that lockbox to the old train depot on the edge of town. Come alone. If you bring the police, or if you don't show up, the neighborhood goes up in flames."

The line disconnected with a sharp beep.

Marcus lowered the phone slowly, his hands shaking slightly as he looked at Elena. "We have to get Leo and Maya out of the house right now. Forget the lockbox—"

"No," Elena interrupted, her voice trembling but resolute as she grabbed the fireproof lockbox from the hidden shelf. "If we leave this behind, we lose all leverage, and they still won't let us walk away. We take the box, we get the kids to Miller, and then we end this."
