Chapter 6: Sirens in the Suburbs

The approaching wail of sirens grew louder with every passing second, bouncing off the brick facades of the quiet neighborhood houses. Arthur Sterling froze, his hand still buried inside the inner pocket of his charcoal overcoat. For the first time, genuine panic flickered across his meticulously groomed features. He glanced toward the open front door, calculating his escape routes with the cold precision of a predator whose trap had just sprung.

"You really called them," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave, losing its smooth veneer of control.

"I didn't have to," Marcus replied calmly, though his muscles remained coiled for action. "Elena knew what kind of man you were the moment she saw you pull up the driveway. She didn't wait for my permission."

Sirens blazed right outside now, the flashing red and blue lights painting the walls of the hallway in harsh, rhythmic strokes. Arthur pulled his empty hand out of his coat, taking a sharp step backward toward the exit. He knew better than to be caught red-handed in a house tied to an active missing persons cold case with federal implications.

"This isn't over, Marcus," Arthur hissed through clenched teeth, his eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "You have no idea what forces are backing this family. The trust owns more than just this property. You've just signed your own death warrant."

With a sharp pivot, Arthur turned and bolted out the front door, slamming it shut behind him just as the heavy thud of police boots hit the porch. Marcus didn't pursue him. Instead, he collapsed against the hallway wall, letting out a long, shuddering breath as his knees finally weakened. The adrenaline crash left him lightheaded, but a profound sense of relief washed over him. They had survived the first wave.

Moments later, the front door was pushed open by two uniformed police officers with their hands resting on their holstered sidearms. "Police! Stay where you are!" one officer commanded, scanning the dim hallway before lowering his weapon upon seeing Marcus’s distressed state.

"Are you the resident?" the second officer asked, stepping further into the house. "We received a frantic emergency call from a woman reporting a home invasion and a cold case violation at this address."

"Yes," Marcus said, straightening his blue shirt and pointing toward the double doors of the study. "I live here. And you need to look inside that study immediately. The man who just ran out the front door is Arthur Sterling. He’s responsible for my brother-in-law's disappearance ten years ago."

The officers exchanged glances, immediately securing the perimeter and calling for backup while Marcus walked out to the front lawn to find Elena and the children waiting safely behind a cruiser.
