Chapter 5: A Dangerous Standoff

The hallway felt suffocatingly small as Arthur Sterling advanced another step, his cold eyes fixed on Marcus with predatory focus. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken threats, every second ticking by like a bomb waiting to detonate. Marcus kept his hands loosely at his sides, ready to move, knowing full well that physical resistance against a man of Arthur’s connections would be disastrous.
"Carter didn't just stumble onto something, did he?" Marcus asked, keeping his voice steady to mask the pounding of his heart. "You framed his disappearance as a tragic accident, but you needed this house kept sealed because of what was buried in the foundation."
Arthur stopped just a few feet away, his gaze shifting subtly toward the cracked framed photograph on the hallway table. "Carter was ambitious, much like you, Marcus. He thought he could expose the family trust and distribute the holdings to charities. He forgot that wealth of this magnitude requires absolute control. When he refused to cooperate, alternative arrangements had to be made."
"You murdered him," Marcus stated, the words tasting like ash in his mouth.
"I protected our legacy," Arthur corrected smoothly, his tone chillingly casual. "And now, you are standing in the exact same spot he stood a decade ago. Hand over the envelope from the wall panel, Marcus, and I guarantee your wife and those two lovely children will live to see tomorrow."
Marcus’s mind raced. He knew Arthur was a dangerous man with deep pockets and ruthless associates, but he also knew that Elena and the kids were currently out of reach, hopefully reaching safety. If he handed over the evidence, Arthur would destroy it, and the truth about Carter would die with them. If he refused, the threat to his family became immediate and terrifyingly real.
"The police already have copies of everything," Marcus bluffed, staring down the older man with feigned confidence. "Elena transmitted the files to a secure cloud server the moment she found the compartment."

Arthur’s calm exterior flickered for a fraction of a second, a microscopic twitch of his jaw betraying his sudden uncertainty. He reached slowly inside his charcoal overcoat, his fingers sliding toward the inner pocket. "You are remarkably foolish, Marcus. Just like Carter."
Before Arthur could pull whatever weapon or device he was reaching for, the distant wail of police sirens began to echo down the suburban street, cutting through the heavy afternoon air and changing the entire dynamic of the confrontation in an instant.
