Chapter 13: The Old Train Depot

The rusted skeletal frame of the abandoned railway station loomed against the dreary horizon like the ribcage of a massive prehistoric beast. Weeds cracked through the concrete platforms, and broken windows stared blindly out over the overgrown tracks. It was a place where secrets were buried and deals were made in the shadows, far away from the prying eyes of the city.

An unmarked black sedan idled near the loading dock, its exhaust puffing white clouds into the crisp autumn air. Standing beside the vehicle was Arthur Sterling, impeccably dressed in his charcoal overcoat, flanked by two burly men in dark suits who radiated casual menace.

A hundred yards away, hidden behind the jagged concrete barrier of an old grain silo, Marcus stepped out of Detective Miller’s vehicle. He carried the heavy fireproof lockbox in his right hand, his muscles tense, his eyes locked onto Arthur. Behind him, Miller and a tactical backup unit were quietly positioning themselves in the surrounding brush, waiting for the signal to move in.

"You came alone, Marcus. I'm impressed," Arthur called out, his voice echoing across the empty concrete expanse as he took a few measured steps forward. "Though I expected nothing less from someone trying to play the hero."

"I brought the box, Arthur," Marcus called back, stopping twenty paces away and holding the lockbox out slightly to show he wasn't armed. "Just like you asked. Now let my family go, and call off whatever gas sabotage your men planted at the house."

Arthur smiled coldly, gesturing to one of the thugs behind him, who pulled out a remote detonator and pocketed it. "You always were overly dramatic, Marcus. There was never any gas bomb. That was simply an incentive to ensure prompt delivery."

"You lied," Marcus said through gritted teeth, stepping closer.

"In my line of work, it's called negotiation," Arthur replied smoothly, holding out his hand for the lockbox. "Now, hand it over, and we can all pretend this unpleasantness never happened."
