Chapter 9: The Anatomy of an Apology

They sat on a pair of wooden storage crates by the greenhouse edge, drinking lukewarm coffee from paper cups provided by the community center.

""I read about CleanGrid,"" Lucia said quietly, looking out over the cityscape.

Damian gave a small, self-deprecating chuckle. ""Turns out, when you refuse to play by their rules, they take their toys away pretty fast.""

""Do you miss it?""

""Not for a single second,"" Damian said without hesitation. He turned to look at her, his eyes steady and clear. ""When I was running that company, I thought having power meant making people bend to my will. I thought success was having a name that made rooms go quiet.""

He paused, taking a slow breath. ""It wasn't until I saw you in that hotel corridor—standing there with such grace while I was acting like a terrified boy with a checkbook—that I realized how utterly bankrupt I was. I don't want that life anymore, Lucia. I don't care about IPOs, or galas, or board seats.""

""What do you care about, Damian?""

Damian looked down at her hands, resting gently on her baby bump. ""I care about making sure that when my child asks who their father is, they don't get handed a balance sheet. I want them to know a man who builds things that help people, and who knows how to say 'I'm sorry' and mean it.""

Lucia looked at him for a long moment. She saw no performance in his face, no rehearsed charisma. For the first time since they had left Spain, she saw the boy she had fallen in love with in the olive orchards of Valencia—the idealist who dreamed of powering the world with clean light.

""It takes time to rebuild soil after it’s been burned, Damian,"" Lucia said softly.

May you like

""I have time,"" Damian answered. ""As long as it takes.""
