Chapter 4: The Midnight Wait

At 11:30 PM, the staff exit of the Grand Venetian opened into the damp chill of a November evening.
Lucia wrapped her oversized woolen coat around herself, pulling a knitted scarf tight around her neck. She adjusted her backpack and began the three-block walk toward the subway station.
""Lucia.""
She stopped. Stepping out from the shadows of an awning across the alley was Damian. He had discarded his jacket and tie, wearing only a dark sweater against the biting wind. He looked disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and desperate.
""Lucia, please. Don't run,"" Damian pleaded, keeping his hands open, palms forward, taking slow steps toward her. ""Five minutes. That’s all I'm asking. Just five minutes.""
""I am not running, Damian,"" Lucia replied, turning to face him. Her voice was steady, carried by the quiet dignity of someone who had nothing left to hide. ""Running implies fear. I am not afraid of you. I am simply going home.""
""Why are you doing this?"" Damian’s voice cracked. ""Why didn't you cash the checks? Why didn't you tell me about the baby? You have a master's degree in landscape design! You shouldn't be cleaning suites and pushing service carts!""
""Honest work has no shame, Damian,"" Lucia answered. ""I earn every dollar that pays for my rent and my prenatal vitamins. What I couldn't stomach was living on hush money from a man who considered his marriage an inconvenience to his business ambitions.""
""I was wrong, Lucia! I lost my mind with the merger and the board—""
""No, Damian. You didn't lose your mind. You revealed your priorities,"" Lucia said gently, without malice. ""You wanted a life where people are accessories to your success. I wanted a partner who understood that a family is built on presence, not prestige.""
""Let me help you,"" Damian stepped closer, tears finally breaking through his defenses. ""Let me buy you an apartment. Let me pay for the best doctors in New York.""
Lucia looked at him, her dark eyes reflecting the amber streetlamps. ""My child will have everything it needs, Damian. But its mother's self-respect is not for sale.""

She turned and descended into the subway station, the rumble of the approaching train drowning out his calls.
