Chapter 5: Unraveling the Grid

The following morning, the boardroom on the fortieth floor of Sterling Tower was filled with high-ranking executives and hedge-fund managers.
Arthur Sterling, Vanessa’s father and the primary venture capitalist behind Damian’s company, sat at the head of the table. He laid a manila folder down with deliberate force.
""Vanessa told me about last night’s spectacle, Damian,"" Arthur Sterling said, his voice dripping with condescending authority. ""This kind of mess cannot happen during an IPO roadshow.""
Damian sat across from him, his laptop closed. ""It wasn't a spectacle, Arthur. It was my family.""
""Your family is whatever protects this company's valuation,"" Arthur replied cold-bloodedly. ""I’ve drawn up an expedited legal agreement. We will establish a blind trust for your former wife and the child, contingent upon a strict non-disclosure agreement and her relocation outside the tri-state area. You will issue a joint statement with Vanessa announcing your engagement before Friday’s bell.""
The room was silent. Every executive around the table looked down, complicit in the routine machinery of corporate damage control.
Damian looked at the agreement. For three years, he had climbed every ladder, signed every compromise, and discarded every piece of his conscience to sit at this exact table. He had believed that reaching the pinnacle of wealth would grant him control over his destiny.
Instead, he had become a puppet in a tailored suit.
Damian stood up. He didn't pick up the pen.
""The agreement is unacceptable,"" Damian announced, his voice carrying clearly across the room.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed. ""If you walk away from this, Damian, I will pull the Sterling Group’s funding. Your company will crash before the market opens tomorrow.""
""Then let it crash,"" Damian said with quiet, unshakeable certainty. ""I spent years building a power grid to light up cities, while allowing the only light that mattered in my life to burn out. I'm done.""

He turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving thirty stunned executives in his wake.
