Chapter 10: The Winter Market

By December, Lucia’s belly had rounded into the full bloom of her eighth month. Her energy was waning, but the demand for *Terra Viva*’s winter workshops was growing.
Every Saturday, the Astoria Community Center hosted an indoor farmers and artisan market. Lucia had a small booth selling hand-crafted terrariums, organic herbal teas, and botanical prints.
Damian was there every morning at 6:00 AM. He set up the heavy wooden folding tables, carried the crates of glass jars, and installed supplemental LED grow lights above her display.
He didn't ask for recognition. When customers arrived, he stepped back into the crowd, assisting other vendors with electrical cords or helping elderly neighbors carry their grocery bags to their cars.
""That young man looks at you like you hung the moon,"" Mrs. Ramos remarked one afternoon, leaning over Lucia’s counter to buy a lavender bundle.
""He made some bad choices, Mrs. Ramos,"" Lucia replied, wrapping the herbs in brown paper.
""We all make bad choices when we get scared, mija,"" Mrs. Ramos said gently, patting Lucia’s hand. ""The question isn't whether someone falls into the mud. The question is whether they use the mud to build bricks or just complain about the dirt. That boy is building bricks.""
Later that afternoon, a sudden winter flurry swept through the neighborhood. As the market closed, Damian walked over with two cups of warm spiced cider.
""I talked to the clinic down on 30th Avenue,"" Damian said hesitantly. ""Their chief obstetrician is Dr. Martinez. She’s wonderful, and she accepts community clinic patients. I paid for the private delivery suite under your name, Lucia. No strings attached. You don't even have to put my name on the birth certificate if you don't want to.""
Lucia looked into his earnest, tired eyes. ""Damian.""
""Yes?""
""Your name is going on the birth certificate,"" Lucia said softly. ""A child deserves to know both parents. But you will have to earn your place at the table every single day.""
May you like
A tear slipped from Damian’s eye, freezing in the winter air. ""Every single day. I promise.""
