Chapter 14: The Unopened Check

That evening, as the festival wound down, a sleek black town car pulled up to the curb of the community garden.
The rear window rolled down, revealing Arthur Sterling. He looked older, tired, his face lined with the stress of a brutal corporate restructuring.
Damian walked over to the car, wiping his hands on a towel. ""Arthur.""
""I heard about your micro-grid project in Queens,"" Arthur said through the window. ""The city council is looking at adopting it for forty public housing complexes. It’s a forty-million-dollar municipal contract.""
""I know,"" Damian replied evenly.
Arthur slipped an envelope toward the window sill. ""The Sterling Group wants to back the venture. We’ll provide the upfront bonding capital, no board interference, thirty percent equity to you.""
Damian looked at the envelope. Two years ago, he would have signed that deal on the hood of the car without reading the fine print.
""No thank you, Arthur,"" Damian said calmly.
Arthur frowned. ""You’re turning down thirty percent of a forty-million-dollar city contract? To stay working out of a rented garage?""
""The contract is already funded by a community credit union and the city’s green infrastructure fund,"" Damian explained. ""The profits are going directly into training local apprentices and funding urban gardens. I don't need your capital, Arthur. And I certainly don't need your brand.""
Arthur stared at Damian for a long moment, seeing an authority in the young man that money could never buy. Without another word, Arthur rolled up the tinted window, and the town car pulled away into the dusk.
May you like
Damian tossed the towel into his toolbox and walked back toward the glowing lights of the garden.
