Chapter 11: The Night of the Storm

On the second week of January, a historic nor’easter battered New York City with heavy sleet and forty-mile-per-hour winds.

Lucia woke at 2:00 AM in her small apartment to a sharp, rhythmic contraction that took her breath away. She sat up in bed, clutching the sheets as a second wave rolled through her abdomen.

She reached for her phone. Her fingers hovered over the screen.

In the past, her pride would have demanded that she call an ambulance and face the hospital alone rather than burden the man who had hurt her. But looking around the dark room, feeling the life inside her ready to emerge, Lucia chose trust over pride.

She dialed Damian’s number.

It rang once.

""Lucia? Are you okay?"" Damian’s voice was instantly alert, without a trace of sleep.

""Damian... it’s time,"" Lucia whispered between breaths. ""The contractions are four minutes apart.""

""I'm downstairs in five minutes. Don't carry anything. I'm coming up.""

True to his word, Damian arrived in four minutes flat, having sprinted six blocks through the blizzard from his garage. His jacket was coated in white slush, his face flushed red from the cold.

He moved with calm, focused urgency. He helped her into her heavy winter coat, picked up her pre-packed hospital bag, and gently supported her as they walked down the icy brownstone stairs.

His old station wagon was already idling at the curb, its heater running full blast, tires fitted with snow chains.

""Breathe, Lucia,"" Damian said steadily as he navigated through the empty, snow-covered streets of Queens. ""We have plenty of time. Dr. Martinez is already waiting at the clinic.""

Lucia leaned her head against the headrest, her hand instinctively reaching across the center console. Damian took it, his warm, rough fingers intertwining with hers—firm, steady, and anchoring.
