Chapter 1: The Weight of Glass

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Venetian Hotel cast intricate webs of gold over the polished marble floor. Yet, under their incandescent warmth, the air felt sub-zero.
Damian stood frozen, the smartphone slipping inches through his relaxed grip before his reflexes caught it. His open navy jacket, adorned with gold buttons, suddenly felt like lead armor. Across from him, standing behind the brass-trimmed room service cart, was Lucia.
Her dark hair was pulled into a neat, restrained bun. Her grey uniform shirt, with its modest white piping, strained gently across the curve of her seven-month pregnancy. Her hands rested protectively over her belly—hands that had once designed botanical gardens in Valencia, now bearing the faint calluses of industrial hospitality work.
""Lucia..."" Damian's voice was a ragged whisper, stripped of his usual boardroom swagger.
""Is everything all right with the service, sir?"" Lucia repeated. Her voice was flat, rhythmic, professional. Not a flicker of anger showed in her dark eyes, only an abyssal stillness that unnerved him far more than screams ever could.
""What are you doing here?"" Damian stepped forward, breaking the unspoken perimeter between guest and staff.
Beside him, the glamorous woman in the bronze satin gown stiffened. Vanessa’s manicured hand tightened on Damian’s forearm, her diamond rings digging into his tailored sleeve. ""You know her, Damian? Who is this?""
""She’s my wife!"" Damian snapped, his composure splintering in front of the hallway mirrors.
Vanessa gasped, recoiling as if struck. ""Your *what*? You told me your divorce was finalized eight months ago in Madrid!""
Lucia didn't flinch. She kept her chin level, looking past Damian’s shoulder toward the double mahogany doors of the penthouse suite at the end of the hall.
""Please continue to your room, sir,"" Lucia said calmly. ""Other guests are resting on this floor.""
""Lucia, stop. Look at me,"" Damian pleaded, reaching out toward her arm.
Lucia stepped back behind the cart, placing the heavy crystal decanters between them. ""Do not touch hotel staff, Mr. Sterling. If you need anything further, dial zero from your room phone.""

With steady, practiced grace, Lucia turned the brass cart around and pushed it smoothly toward the service elevator. The mechanical doors opened with a soft chime, swallowed her within their stainless-steel interior, and closed—leaving Damian staring at his own pale reflection in the polished brass.
