Chapter 15: The Light We Choose

The sun set behind the Manhattan skyline, casting long, golden fingers of light across the blooming wisteria of the Sanctuary Garden.
Lucia sat on a cedar bench beneath the arbor, gently rocking Sofia, who was drifting to sleep with a full belly and rosy cheeks. The solar lanterns Damian had installed clicked on automatically, bathing the path in a soft, welcoming amber glow that mirrored the starlight above.
Damian walked over and sat on the opposite end of the bench, leaving respectful space between them.
""Arthur came by,"" Damian mentioned quietly.
""I saw the car,"" Lucia said. ""What did he want?""
""To buy what we built,"" Damian smiled faintly. ""I told him it wasn't for sale.""
Lucia looked at him across the cedar slats. The moonlight caught the silver threads beginning to show at his temples. The arrogance of the man in the hotel corridor had been completely burned away, replaced by the quiet, grounded grace of someone who had found his true north.
""Damian,"" Lucia said softly.
He looked up. ""Yes?""
Lucia shifted slightly, patting the empty space beside her on the bench. ""Sit closer. Sofia likes the sound of your heartbeat.""
Damian’s breath caught. He slid across the bench, sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with her. He reached down and rested his hand over Lucia’s, his fingers intertwining with hers naturally, as if they had never been torn apart.
