Chapter 1: The Cold Marble

The polished marble floor of the Vance manor felt like frozen glass against Clara’s bruised shoulder. High above, the crystal chandelier hummed with low, merciless brilliance, illuminating Victoria Vance as she descended the final steps. Victoria’s emerald silk gown swept the dark mahogany with a crisp, serpentine whisper.

"You really thought you could play the doting daughter-in-law forever, didn't you?" Victoria sneered, adjusting the pearl choker tight against her throat. "Look at you. Dirt clinging to gold. You never had the breeding for this family, Clara."

Clara kept her forehead pressed against the stone. Her breath shuddered in her chest, ragged and uneven. Tears pooled on the cold surface beneath her cheeks, catching the sharp glare of the lights. She played the ruined orphan perfectly, clutching her side as if broken from the fall.

"Julian will know what you did," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with calculated frailty. "He loved his father. He’ll find out."

Victoria let out a dry, venomous laugh that echoed into the cavernous rafters. "Julian is my son. He believes what I sculpt for him. By tomorrow morning, you will be nothing more than an unstable fortune hunter who assaulted her grieving mother-in-law and fled into the night."

Victoria turned her back, walking toward the grand double doors to summon the private security detail waiting outside.

In that quiet second, the tremor vanished from Clara’s hands.

She turned her head slightly, letting her blonde hair curtain the tiny black pin hidden inside the collar of her golden slip dress. The tiny red indicator blinked once. Clara reached beneath her thigh, sliding her dark smartphone to her lips.

Her tears remained, but her gaze went dead and cold.

"Detective," Clara murmured into the receiver, her whisper cutting through the ambient hum of the estate. "She took the bait. I have her confession on tape. Take her down."
