Chapter 15: The New Horizon

Spring arrived in upstate New York with sudden warmth, melting away the bitter winter frost and coaxing green shoots from the damp earth.

Clara’s new office—The Miller Foundation for Ethical Accountability—opened in a modest brick building in downtown Albany. There were no marble floors, no crystal chandeliers, and no locked vaults of deceit. Just sunlit desks, dedicated young researchers, and a commitment to transparency.

Late on a Friday afternoon, as the staff packed up for the weekend, a small package arrived on Clara’s desk. It had no return address, just a simple Vermont postmark.

Clara carefully sliced open the brown paper wrapping.

Inside was an original oil painting on canvas. It depicted a solitary woman standing at the edge of an autumn forest at dawn, looking out over a valley bathed in warm, golden light. The brushwork was delicate, full of quiet hope and unyielding strength.

Tucked into the wooden frame was a small handwritten card:

> *To Clara—*
> *The truth is never easy to paint, but it is the only thing that endures. Thank you for showing me how to see clearly.*
> *— J.*

Clara traced the dried paint with her fingertip, a genuine, peaceful smile touching her lips. She hung the canvas on the central wall across from her desk, right where the morning sun would hit it every day.

She turned off the office lights, locked the glass door behind her, and walked out into the cool evening breeze—free from the shadows of the past, step by step into her own light.
