Chapter 2: Echoes in the Dark

Detective Mark Alvarez sat in an unmarked sedan parked four hundred yards down the winding, oak-lined driveway of the Vance estate. The audio feed through his earpiece was razor sharp. He had listened to Victoria Vance confess to framing Clara, but more importantly, to the subtle boast Victoria let slip about manipulating her late husband’s final medication.
"Copy that, Clara," Alvarez said into his lapel mic. "Units are moving into position at the south gate. Don't engage. Just hold tight."
Inside the mansion, Clara didn't move from the floor. She knew Victoria's cruelty wasn't mere arrogance; it was a fortress built over thirty years of absolute control. The Vance pharmaceutical empire had been built on stolen patents and buried casualties. Clara's own father had been one of those casualties—an honest chemist whose heart failed under suspicious circumstances after blowing the whistle on a contaminated batch of pediatric antibiotics.
The front doors swung wide. Two burly security guards in dark suits entered, their expressions stony.
"Get her out of my sight," Victoria commanded from the foot of the stairs, not even turning to look. "Drop her past the gate line. If she tries to step foot on this property again, use whatever force is necessary."
"Understood, Mrs. Vance," the lead guard said, stepping forward and reaching for Clara’s arm.

Clara let herself go limp as the man hauled her upward. Pain shot through her ribs from the earlier tumble down the stairs, but she bit her lip, refusing to cry out. As she was dragged across the threshold into the damp autumn air, the distant sound of sirens began to bleed into the wind.
