Chapter 13: Truth Without Masks

Julian walked slowly to the grave, bowed his head respectfully, and placed the rosemary beside the white lilies.
"Detective Alvarez told me where to find you," Julian said softly. "I hope you don't mind."
"I don't mind," Clara replied honestly.
They walked together along the winding path between the old oak trees, the silence between them no longer filled with suspicion or calculated maneuvers.
"How are you holding up with the liquidation?" Clara asked.
"The board tried to fight it," Julian said with a faint, weary smile. "They threatened lawsuits, injunctions... but with the evidence from my father's ledger, they had no leverage. The compensation fund paid out its first batch of medical claims yesterday. It feels... right. Like clearing away poisonous weeds so something good can actually grow."
"And you?" Clara looked at him. "What happens to Julian Vance now?"
"The Vance name is retired," he said, turning to look into her eyes. "I’m going back to teaching art history in Vermont. Simple life. Honest work. No boardrooms. No secrets."
He paused, his gaze softening. "What about you, Clara? Who are you when you don't have to be an operative?"

Clara looked out over the rolling hills. "I think I’m going to find out. I’m opening a non-profit investigative lab. Helping families who can’t afford high-priced attorneys when corporations try to bury them."
