Chapter 5: The Heir’s Return

The safe house was a nondescript brick brownstone in upstate New York, far removed from the manicured lawns of Blackwood Ridge. Rain began to fall around dawn, pattering softly against the bay windows.
The front door unlocked with a heavy thud. Julian Vance walked into the room, his trench coat soaked, his dark hair disheveled. The boyish charm that usually lit up his face was completely hollowed out, replaced by dark circles and an expression of stunned agony.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
"Is it true?" Julian finally asked, his voice barely audible above the rain.
Clara stood up from the sofa. She had changed into simple jeans and an oversized sweater, stripping away the glamorous persona she had worn for eighteen months. "The audio files are genuine, Julian. Your mother poisoned your father's digitalis regimen over six months. She couldn't let him sign the foundation over to the public trust."
Julian dropped his keys onto the table. His hands shook violently as he buried his face in his palms. "And you? Were you ever real, Clara? Or was every dinner, every conversation, every morning... just an undercover operation?"
The question hung between them like a blade. Clara felt a genuine ache in her chest—the first uncalculated emotion she had allowed herself since entering the Vance household.
"I started this for justice, Julian," she said softly, stepping closer but keeping a respectful distance. "My father died because of your family's greed. But the person you are... your kindness, your decency... that was the only part of this nightmare I didn't have to fake."
Julian looked up, his hazel eyes wet with betrayal. "You used me as an unlocked door to get to my mother."
May you like
"I did," Clara confessed, refusing to hide behind comfortable lies. "And I won't ask you to forgive me."
