Chapter 10: The Fall of the Matriarch

The bullet did not come from Alvarez, nor did it strike Clara.

Julian Vance stepped onto the gravel roof, having arrived with the second backup unit through the adjacent building's fire escape. He had fired a warning shot into the air with a service weapon handed to him by a marshal below.

"Mother, stop!" Julian’s voice broke through the storm, carrying a profound, shattering authority.

Victoria froze. Her hands wavered, the gun lowering slightly as she turned to see her only child standing in the downpour.

"Julian..." Victoria stammered, her voice suddenly trembling like that of a lost child. "I did this for you. Everything was for your inheritance. To keep our name untouched."

"Our name is covered in blood," Julian said, walking slowly toward her, his face streaked with tears and rain. "I have the ledger, Mother. I opened father's vault. I saw your signatures on every payout, every silence contract, every order of digitalis."

Victoria looked down at the gun in her hand, then at Julian. The grand illusion she had maintained for four decades had finally dissolved, leaving only a broken, desperate woman standing in the rain.

"Julian... please..." she whispered.

Julian reached out gently, taking the revolver from her limp fingers and passing it back to Alvarez. "It's over, Mother. Restitution begins tonight."

Police officers swarmed the roof, securing Victoria in zip-ties and leading her down the stairs. She offered no resistance, her head bowed against the storm.
