Chapter 3: The Flashing Red and Blue

The sirens didn't start with a scream; they arrived as a low, synchronized pulse that tore through the secluded luxury of Blackwood Ridge.

Before the guards could carry Clara down the sweeping limestone steps, three black tactical vehicles surged through the wrought-iron gates, cutting off the driveway. Headlights blinded the guards, freezing them in place.

"State Police! Keep your hands where we can see them!"

Victoria rushed out onto the veranda, her face twisted in outrage. "What is the meaning of this? Do you have any idea whose property you are trespassing on? I am Victoria Vance!"

Alvarez stepped out of the lead cruiser, holding a signed warrant high under the glare of the squad lights. "Mrs. Vance, step away from the young woman."

"She attacked me!" Victoria shrieked, pointing an accusatory finger at Clara. "She broke into my private study, stole family documents, and fell down the stairs when I caught her! Arrest her!"

Alvarez didn't flinch. He walked past the guards, motioning his officers to secure them. He gently offered a jacket to Clara, wrapping the heavy navy fleece around her trembling shoulders.

"We're not here for Mrs. Julian Vance," Alvarez said calmly, turning his gaze back to Victoria. "We are here pursuant to a federal warrant for wire fraud, witness intimidation, and the murder investigation of Arthur Vance."

Victoria’s aristocratic composure cracked, a sudden pale panic flashing behind her eyes. "You have no proof. Arthur died of natural heart failure. It was certified!"

"It was," Clara spoke up, stepping forward into the light. Her voice was steady now, devoid of fear. "Until we tested the private cellar supply you kept locked in your vanity. The digital recorder in my dress captured everything, Victoria. Every single word."
