Chapter 9: Unearthing the Past**

With Eleanor in county lockup awaiting her formal arraignment, Julian returned to the Vance estate one last time to collect their personal belongings. Accompanied by his attorney, he walked through the cavernous, quiet rooms that had once felt like home.

In the master study, Julian unlocked Eleanor’s private safe, armed with a court order for discovery. Among the financial ledgers and stock certificates lay a faded green leather journal belonging to his late father, Thomas Vance, who had passed away when Julian was only twelve.

Julian sat behind the massive mahogany desk and opened the journal. The handwriting was familiar, gentle, and worn. As he read through the entries from twenty years prior, the truth of his family's dark dynamic finally crystallized.

*“Eleanor cannot accept love that she cannot control,”* Thomas had written weeks before his sudden heart attack. *“She views our son not as a child, but as an investment portfolio. If I do not leave her the authority to control his trust, I fear she will consume him entirely. May God forgive me for not being strong enough to take him and walk away.”*

A single tear fell onto the yellowed page. Julian closed the journal, hugging it against his chest. His father hadn't been weak; he had been trapped in the same gilded web.

"I'm breaking the chain, Dad," Julian whispered to the empty room. "I promise you."
