Chapter 2: The Silent Drive**

The rain began just as the black-and-white cruiser pulled away from the gates of the Vance estate. Eleanor had departed in the back of a private town car arranged by her corporate attorneys, refusing to speak another word without legal counsel present. But the silence she left behind was louder than any screaming match.

Inside Julian’s SUV, the only sound was the rhythmic swish of windshield wipers and the soft, rhythmic breathing of baby Leo asleep in his rear-facing car seat. Clara sat in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead at the wet asphalt reflecting the streetlights of suburban Connecticut. Julian kept one hand on the steering wheel and reached across the console to gently enclose Clara’s trembling fingers.

"We’re going to a private clinic in Fairfield," Julian murmured, his thumb stroking the back of her hand. "Dr. Bennett is an old friend from college. No reporters, no family connections, no Vance board members. Just a real doctor who will document everything properly."

Clara swallowed hard, tasting the metallic tang of blood in her mouth. "She told me I was nothing, Julian. She said a girl from a working-class diner in South Boston would never have custody of an heir to the Vance trust. She said she’d make sure I disappeared."

"She has money, Clara, but she doesn't own the world," Julian said, his jaw clenching tight. "And she doesn't own us. Not anymore."

Clara looked back at their sleeping child. Leo’s tiny eyelashes fluttered in a dream. She placed her free hand against the glass of the window, wondering how many layers of luxury you had to peel away before you found the rot underneath.
