Chapter 3: Paper Trails and Bruises**

The clinical room smelled of antiseptic and lavender. Dr. Bennett gently dabbed a saline swab across Clara’s cheekbone, taking precise photographs with a forensic camera while Julian stood silently in the corner, holding Leo against his chest.

"These aren't fall injuries, Clara," Dr. Bennett said gently, setting the camera aside. "These are defensive grip marks on your forearms, and blunt impact trauma to the zygomatic arch. Someone grabbed you, shook you, and struck you."

"She wanted the legal agreement signed," Clara explained, her voice steadying. "Eleanor brought private papers to the house while Julian was at the downtown office. She wanted full legal guardianship granted to her estate trust in exchange for five million dollars. When I tore the papers in half, she snapped."

Julian closed his eyes, a wave of profound guilt washing over him. For five years, he had tried to bridge the impossible gap between the cold, transactional world of his mother’s empire and the warm, honest life he wanted with Clara. He had believed that wealth and privilege could be tamed with patience. He had been blind.

"The documentation is airtight," Dr. Bennett said, handing Julian a sealed medical folder. "I’ve uploaded the scans to the state child welfare database and the county prosecutor's secure server. If she attempts to file for emergency custody, this record will block her instantly."

As they stepped back into the corridor, Julian’s phone buzzed violently. It was a message from Marcus Vance, his uncle and the chairman of Vance Global Logistics.
