Chapter 13: The Confrontation**

The Vance mansion had been stripped of its grandeur. Half the furniture was draped in dust sheets, and the once-pristine gardens were overgrown with weeds. Eleanor sat in an armchair by the cold fireplace, an electronic ankle monitor blinking a dull green light beneath the hem of her trousers.

When Julian walked into the room, she looked up with a desperate, calculating hope in her eyes.

"Julian," she said, her voice cracking. "You came. You have to tell the district attorney that Clara exaggerated. If you testify for my character, they will drop the felony charges to probation."

Julian remained standing by the entryway, keeping his distance. "You still don't understand, do you, Mother?"

"Understand what?" Eleanor cried out, her hands trembling. "I gave you everything! The finest schools, the corporate presidency, a legacy worth hundreds of millions! And you threw it away for a girl who brings nothing to this family!"

"Clara brought honesty," Julian said, his voice ringing steady and clear through the empty room. "She brought love that didn't come with conditions or contracts. Dad spent his entire life suffocating in this house because you treated people like assets to be managed. I almost let you do the same to my son."

Eleanor’s eyes filled with bitter tears. "You are my son. You owe me your life."

"I owe you respect as the woman who gave me birth," Julian answered calmly. "But I owe my wife and my son my loyalty, my protection, and my future. Goodbye, Mother."

He turned on his heel and walked out, ignoring her desperate cries echoing down the hollow marble halls.
