Chapter 15: A First Birthday**

Summer returned to the upstate countryside. The farmhouse backyard was decorated with simple pastel balloons, string lights hung between the old oak trees, and a long wooden picnic table covered in homemade pies and sandwiches.
Laughter filled the afternoon air. Sarah and Clara’s father, retired truck driver Joe, sat on the porch laughing as little Leo—now celebrating his first birthday—took his first wobbly steps across the soft clover lawn toward them.
Clara emerged from the kitchen carrying a small, homemade strawberry cake decorated with a single bright candle. She set it gently on the wooden picnic table, her face glowing with genuine joy.
Julian knelt down beside his son, helping little Leo stand steady on his tiny feet. He looked up at Clara, whose smile was radiant and free of any shadow.
