Chapter 6: Sanctuary**

Thirty miles north of the city, tucked away in a quiet residential neighborhood of New Haven, sat a small craftsman bungalow with a wraparound wooden porch. It belonged to Clara’s older sister, Sarah, a middle-school English teacher who opened the front door the moment she heard the car gravel crunch in the driveway.
"Oh, Clara," Sarah gasped, wrapping her arms around her sister as Clara stepped onto the porch holding Leo. Sarah pulled them both into the warm, sunlit kitchen that smelled of fresh cinnamon and black coffee—a world away from the cold marble and sterile silence of the Vance estate.
Julian arrived an hour later, stepping onto the worn hardwood floors with heavy shoulders. He looked exhausted, the sharp executive facade melting away to reveal the broken man underneath.
"How did it go?" Clara asked, setting a cup of chamomile tea in front of him at the wooden kitchen table.
"The board voted unanimously to place her on indefinite administrative leave," Julian said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "They’re initiating an internal audit. The district attorney’s office called twenty minutes ago—they’re reviewing Dr. Bennett’s medical file and the domestic assault report."
Clara sat beside him, gently placing her hand over his. "Does it feel like a victory?"

Julian shook his head, looking down at his wedding ring. "No. It feels like waking up from a twenty-year nightmare. I let her control every aspect of my life because I thought that was what loyalty meant. But seeing what she did to you... that wasn't family. That was tyranny."
