Chapter 7: Shadows at the Gate**

Peace in the bungalow was brief. Two days later, as Sarah watered the hydrangeas on the front lawn, a sleek black sedan with tinted windows parked at the end of the cul-de-sac. It sat idling for hours, its presence a silent menace.

Clara noticed it first through the living room curtains. Her breath caught in her throat, instincts taking over as she stepped back into the shadow of the wall, holding Leo tight against her chest. "Julian... look."

Julian looked out the window, his jaw tightening. He didn't yell or panic. Instead, he pulled out his phone and dialed Detective Ruiz, the lead investigator assigned to Clara’s assault case.

"Detective, we have surveillance outside my sister-in-law’s home," Julian said calmly. "Licence plate New York, Bravo-Echo-Seven-Niner-Four."

Within ten minutes, two unmarked police cruisers boxed the sedan into the curb. The driver was ordered out at gunpoint. It turned out to be Arthur Sterling, Eleanor Vance’s personal private security contractor, carrying high-resolution camera equipment and legal summons papers intended to serve Clara directly.

Detective Ruiz knocked on the front door shortly after. "Mr. Vance, we found detailed itineraries of your wife's daily schedule in his vehicle. This constitutes a direct violation of the emergency protective order issued against your mother. She coordinated this."

Clara felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. "She won't stop, will she? Not until she feels like she has won."

"She’s out of moves, Clara," Detective Ruiz assured her. "A warrant for Eleanor Vance’s arrest has just been signed by the state magistrate."
