Chapter 8: The Second Tape

Dante’s pulse quickened. He carefully pulled the metal cylinder from the tree root. Inside, wrapped in oilcloth, was a second cassette tape, labeled:
*FOR DANTE - WHEN YOU ARE READY.*
Beside it was a small brass key.
Dante looked at the tape in disbelief. Elena had anticipated everything. She knew that if Dante ever found the first tape, his search would inevitably lead him here, to her resting place.
That evening, they checked into a quiet, family-run bed and breakfast near the coast. While Chiara slept peacefully in the large four-poster bed, Dante sat on the balcony, the sound of the Mediterranean waves crashing against the cliffs below.
He pressed play on the portable Walkman.
*""Hello, my love,""* Elena’s voice was softer this time, colored by a profound, heartbreaking calm. *""If you are at my grave, it means you chose to listen. It means you chose Chiara over your pride.""*
Dante leaned back, looking up at the canopy of stars.
*""The brass key in the container opens a safety deposit box at the Banca di San Marino. In it, you won't find money or bearer bonds. You will find the truth about your father's death. It wasn't the rival families, Dante. It was your own inner circle—the very men you called brothers. They killed him to push you into power, knowing your rage would make you a ruthless weapon for their greed.""*
Dante stiffened, the blood running cold in his veins.

*""I found out, and that was why they marked me. But I didn't leave this recording for revenge, Dante. I left it so you would understand that vengeance is a circle that never ends. Use the evidence to protect yourself, but do not spill blood. Break the cycle. For Chiara.""*
