Chapter 7: The Unmarked Stone

The grave was located in the farthest corner of the churchyard, beneath the shade of an ancient weeping willow. The headstone was simple grey granite, bearing only the inscription:

*Elena Rossi* *1992 – 2023* *“In silence, there is truth.”*

Dante knelt before the stone, placing a bouquet of fresh white lilies—Elena’s favorite—at its base.

Chiara squatted beside him, running her small fingers across the carved letters. ""Mama's sleeping here?""

""Her body is resting here, Chiara,"" Dante said, his voice thick with emotion. ""But her soul is watching over you. Every second of every day.""

Dante closed his eyes and leaned his forehead against the cool stone.

*I'm sorry, Elena,* he thought. *I was blind. I was arrogant. I thought I could control the world, but I couldn't even protect the woman who gave me everything. But I promise you, with whatever breath I have left, our daughter will never know fear.*

As if answering him, a gentle breeze rustled the willow branches above them, sending a shower of sunlight dancing across the grass.

Chiara suddenly gasped and pointed at the base of the headstone. ""Look, Daddy! A tiny box!""

Dante frowned and looked closer. Tucked into the hollow root of the willow tree beside the stone was a small, weatherproof metal container.
