Chapter 14: The Echo Returned

That evening, as an ocean storm rattled against the windows of their warm, fire-lit cottage, Clara brought down an old wooden chest from the attic.
Inside lay the battered silver Sony Walkman and the two cassette tapes from long ago.
Clara sat on the wool rug before the fireplace, turning the clear plastic cassette over in her hands. She looked at the faded black handwriting reading *DANTE*.
""Dad?"" she asked softly. ""Do you ever miss who you were before?""
David sat beside her on the rug, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. He watched the flames dance across the hearth, casting long, peaceful shadows on the walls.
""Not for a single second, Clara,"" he answered without hesitation. ""The man I was before had everything the world says is valuable—money, fear, influence. But he was empty. He was dead inside.""
He gently touched the little crescent birthmark on her shoulder, visible just above her collarbone.
""You gave me a reason to be human,"" he said softly. ""You and your mother saved my life.""
Clara pressed the tape into the Walkman, plugged in a small external speaker, and pressed *PLAY*.
