Chapter 4: The Confrontation

Downstairs, the estate was transforming into a theater of high society. Caterers carried silver trays of champagne, string quartets tuned their instruments near the grand staircase, and influential figures in politics and commerce began arriving at the front gates.

In the private library behind the ballroom, Dante stood behind the heavy oak desk, staring at Victoria.

Victoria was sipping red wine, though the glass rattled slightly against her manicured fingernails.

""You knew,"" Dante stated. His voice was dangerously calm, devoid of any inflection. ""For three years, you let me believe Elena abandoned me with another man's child.""

Victoria set the glass down with a sharp clink. ""I did what had to be done to save this family, Dante!""

""You lied to me!"" he roared, slamming his palm onto the desk with enough force to splinter the polished mahogany. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. ""You made me an absentee father to my own blood!""

""And look at what your blood brings!"" Victoria shot back, her composure shattering into desperate anger. ""Look at your hands, Dante! Look at your life! The Cartel was hunting Elena’s family! If they knew you had a legitimate daughter, Chiara would have spent her infancy in a bulletproof bunker or in a pine box! I made Elena disappear so the child could live! I told you she was not yours so you wouldn't go to war and burn Europe to the ground looking for her!""

Dante stood motionless, his chest heaving. The logic was cold, calculated, and ruthlessly practical—the exact brand of cynical strategy their father had taught them.

""Where is she buried, Victoria?"" Dante asked, his eyes burning into hers.

Victoria swallowed hard. ""Not in the family mausoleum. In a small churchyard in Lucca. Under her maiden name.""

""Tonight,"" Dante said, adjusting the cuffs of his tuxedo, his voice icy and resolved, ""the Dante Foundation announces its dissolution. Everything—the holdings, the shell companies, the private security arms—is being liquidated into a trust fund for child welfare and rehabilitation.""

Victoria stared at him in horror. ""You're committing financial suicide! The board will destroy you!""

""Let them try,"" Dante said, walking past her toward the grand ballroom doors. ""I spent my life building an empire of shadows. I am done living in the dark.""
