Chapter 3: The Crescent Mark

The nursery on the eastern wing was painted in muted pastels, filled with hand-carved wooden toys and soft velvet armchairs. Chiara was sitting on a plush rug, carefully stacking alphabet blocks under the watchful eye of a young nanny.

When Dante entered, the nanny immediately rose, bowed her head, and stepped out of the room upon seeing his expression.

Dante approached slowly, his heavy dress shoes making no sound on the thick wool rug. He knelt beside Chiara, watching her small, delicate fingers balance a blue block on top of a red one.

""Look, Mr. Dante,"" she beamed, looking up with genuine pride. ""A castle.""

""It's beautiful, *piccola*,"" he whispered.

His heart hammered against his ribs with a violence he hadn't felt in combat. Slowly, gently, he lifted the ruffle of her vintage dress at the left shoulder.

There, resting just beneath her delicate collarbone on pale skin, was a distinct, dark-pigmented birthmark shaped exactly like a waning crescent moon.

Dante’s hand moved involuntarily to his own collarbone beneath his starched white shirt, where an identical mark lay hidden beneath layers of black tattoo ink.

A hot, searing tear escaped his eye, tracking down his cheek before he could stop it. Three years. Three years of treating this child as a distant ward, an orphan of a woman who had allegedly betrayed him, providing her with endless luxury but keeping his heart walled behind iron gates.

""Why are you crying?"" Chiara asked, tilting her head. She reached out a small hand, her soft thumb awkwardly wiping the wetness from his cheek. ""Did you hurt your knee?""

Dante caught her tiny hand in his calloused palm and kissed the back of her fingers.

""No, my darling,"" Dante whispered, his voice breaking into a ragged sob. ""I just... I finally found something I lost a long time ago.""

He pulled her into his arms, burying his face into her soft curls. Chiara blinked in mild surprise, then wrapped her little arms around his neck, resting her chin on his broad shoulder.
