Chapter 2: A Voice from the Grave

The study on the third floor was the only room in the estate untouched by modern renovations. Lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and scented with aged paper and pipe tobacco, it was Dante’s sanctuary.

Maria returned twenty minutes later carrying a battered silver Sony Walkman, its plastic scratched and weathered. Her hands shook as she placed it on Dante’s massive desk.

""Where did you get this?"" Dante asked without looking up.

""It belonged to Miss Elena, sir,"" Maria whispered. ""She left a box with me before... before that night. She told me to wait until Chiara was old enough to ask questions. But when the accident happened, I panicked. I hid the box behind the piano soundboard. I forgot about the tape.""

Dante didn't answer. He waved his hand, dismissing Maria. When the heavy door clicked shut, he sat alone in the dim room, save for the rain that had begun to tap against the leaded glass windows.

He inserted the cassette. The mechanical *clack* of the plastic door snapping shut sounded deafening. He pressed the heavy black *PLAY* button.

A long hiss of magnetic tape filled the room. White noise. The sound of static rushing like wind through dry grass.

Then, a sharp intake of breath.

*""Dante.""*

The sound of Elena’s voice struck him like a physical blow. The air evacuated his lungs. It was not the voice of the bitter, terrified woman from their final months together; it was the warm, resonant tone from the days when they lived in that small loft in Florence, before wealth, crime, and legacy tore them apart.

*""If you are listening to this, it means my time ran out faster than I hoped,""* the recording continued, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic ticking of a clock in the background. *""And it means you are finally looking at our daughter.""*

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. *Our daughter.*

*""I know what they told you, Dante. Victoria told you that Chiara was fathered by someone else. She told you I betrayed you so you would sign the release papers and let me leave. She did it to protect your empire from my past, and I let her do it because I was terrified of what your world would do to a child.""*

Elena paused on the tape, a faint, ragged cough echoing through the speaker.

*""Look at her left shoulder, Dante. Look at the birthmark under her collarbone. The same crescent you bear. She is yours. Not an obligation. Not an heir to a syndicate. A daughter. Please... don't let your anger raise her. Teach her how to love, even if you never learned how yourself.""*

The tape ended with a sudden *thunk* of the stop button, plunging the study into suffocating silence.
