Chapter 12: A New Identity

When the final verdicts were delivered, forty-two high-ranking syndicate leaders and corrupt politicians were sentenced to life imprisonment. The empire that had cast a shadow over northern Italy for half a century was definitively crushed.
On a rainy morning in October, Inspector Rossi handed Dante a brown envelope containing two passports, birth certificates, and property deeds.
""Your new names,"" Rossi said. ""David and Clara Evans. A small coastal town in Maine, United States. You have a modest home, a carpentry workshop, and enough funds for a quiet life.""
Dante looked at the documents, then back at Rossi. ""Thank you, Inspector.""
""Don't thank me, David,"" Rossi said with a faint, warm smile. ""You earned this. Now go raise that little girl. That’s your only duty now.""
Dante walked out of the government facility into the crisp autumn air. Waiting in the unmarked car was Maria, who had refused to leave their side and had chosen to accompany them to America as Clara's grandmother figure.
As Dante got into the passenger seat, Chiara leaned over from the back and handed him a small, polished wooden block.
""For your new workshop, Daddy,"" she said proudly.
Dante turned the block over in his hand, feeling the smooth grain of the cedar. He smiled—a real, unfiltered smile that reached his eyes.
