Chapter 9 - Cornered on the Tarmac

The darkness of the airfield was sliced open only by the rhythmic red flash of the jet’s tail beacon, casting an eerie, blood-red glow over the wet tarmac. Eleanor Vance stumbled backward up the metal boarding stairs, her manicured hands clutching the handrail as Marcus stepped out of the shadows beneath the wing. His dark suit was drenched with rain, his hair plastered to his forehead, but his posture was immovable, like a monument carved from dark stone.

"Marcus!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and sheer, primal panic. She looked around frantically for her guards, but the concrete below was empty, save for two dark figures lying motionless near the fence. "You... how did you—this is private property! You can't touch me!"

Marcus didn't speak. He took a slow, deliberate step up the metal stairs, his heavy boots clanging against the grating with every advance. The sheer menace radiating from his frame forced Eleanor back another step, until the small of her back hit the cabin door.

"You tried to ruin my company, Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm baritone that carried easily over the whine of the jet engines. "You framed an innocent woman, and you tried to murder my unborn child. Did you really think I would let you board a plane and fly away to a villa in Zurich?"

Eleanor’s chest heaved rapidly, the priceless diamond necklace around her throat flashing in the red light as she fought to regain her composure. She forced a bitter, hysterical laugh, tossing her blonde hair back over her shoulder.

"Your child?" Eleanor spat out with venomous contempt, pointing a trembling finger down toward the parked car in the treeline. "You think the board is going to let a street-level maid carry the Sterling heir? The moment I release the forensic audits to the federal prosecutors, your entire empire—and your little breeding project—will be seized by the state!"

Marcus stopped two steps below her, looking down with eyes as cold as deep-sea ice. "The foundation audits are encrypted on a flash drive currently sitting in federal custody, Eleanor. You didn't steal the real records; you stole the trap I laid for you."

For a split second, the color drained entirely from Eleanor’s face. The reality of her defeat crashed down upon her with crushing weight. Her jaw went slack, and the manic bravado vanished, replaced by the desperate cunning of a cornered predator.

"You think you’ve won," Eleanor whispered, a dark, dangerous smile suddenly curling the corners of her lips. She reached slowly inside the deep pocket of her cashmere coat. "You arrogant bastard. If I can't have the Sterling estate, nobody will."

From the shadows at the edge of the runway, a third guard—one who had managed to circle around through the drainage ditch—suddenly stepped into view, raising a heavy-caliber handgun directly toward Marcus’s back, shouting, "Drop your weapons or I blow his head off!"
