Chapter 12 - Ash and Diamond

The cold morning light crept slowly over the jagged peaks of Eagle’s Ridge, casting a pale, washed-out gold across the charred remains of the private airfield’s perimeter fence. Inside the quiet, antiseptic confines of the federal holding facility’s medical wing, the air smelled of bleach and fresh rain.
Clara sat upright on the examination table, a light woolen blanket draped over her shoulders. The fetal heart monitor beside her beat with a steady, rhythmic cadence that filled the room with a deep, calming reassurance. A young female doctor pulled away the ultrasound wand, smiling warmly as she wiped the gel from Clara’s abdomen.
"Heart rate is strong, and the bruising on her abdomen is healing nicely," the doctor announced, looking up at Marcus, who stood rigidly beside the examination table with his hands buried deep in his trouser pockets. "She’s out of the danger zone. But absolute rest for the next week is still non-negotiable."
Marcus exhaled a long, slow breath—the first truly relaxed breath he had taken in days. The sharp lines of tension around his jaw finally softened. He nodded to the doctor, who quietly packed her equipment and slipped out of the room, leaving the two of them alone in the quiet silence.
"You heard her," Marcus said softly, pulling up a steel chair and sitting down beside the table. "You're staying at my private penthouse in the city from now on. No maids' quarters, no back hallways, no hiding."
Clara looked down at her hands, tracing the hem of the blanket. "And the board? After what happened downtown, the newspapers are already calling it the corporate crime of the century. The Vance family name is completely ruined."
"Let it burn," Marcus replied without a trace of hesitation. He reached out, gently taking her hand between both of his calloused palms. "The archives burned, but the ownership deeds were safely digitized and verified by the federal magistrate an hour ago. The Sterling estate belongs to us—and more importantly, our child has a clean, secure legacy waiting."
Clara looked up, her dark eyes meeting his intense, unwavering gaze. The memory of Eleanor’s furious screaming in the mansion hallway felt like a lifetime ago. The blood, the terror, the cold tile floor—it was all behind them now. But a lingering shadow remained in the back of her mind.
"What happens to Eleanor?" Clara asked quietly.
Marcus’s expression hardened just a fraction. "Federal prison. White-collar wing, maximum security. Her bank accounts have been frozen, her assets seized, and her co-conspirators within the board are already turning on each other to secure plea deals. She will never step foot inside the Sterling estate again."
Clara nodded slowly, letting out a breath she felt she had been holding for years. She squeezed Marcus’s hand, feeling the solid, unbreakable warmth of his grip.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the medical room swung open without warning. A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal federal prosecutor's suit stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He looked at Marcus with a grim, solemn expression.

"Mr. Sterling," the prosecutor said without preamble. "We just received a final deposition from Eleanor Vance’s personal secretary before she was transferred. There’s something else in the financial records you need to see—something Eleanor hid even deeper than the foundation accounts."
