Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Corridor

The sudden plunge into darkness sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through Clara’s veins. The hospital room’s emergency backup generator failed to kick in immediately, leaving only the pale, eerie glow of the city lights cutting through the rain-streaked windowpanes. Clara pulled herself upright, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she clutched her swollen stomach.

"Marcus?" she called out, her voice trembling in the suffocating silence. There was no answer.

Outside the heavy oak door, the low murmur of conversation that had anchored her sense of security was gone. In its place, a heavy, dragging sound echoed down the linoleum-floored hallway. It sounded like heavy boots sliding slowly across the floorboards, accompanied by the distinct, metallic clink of a dropped firearm.

Clara slid her legs over the edge of the bed, ignoring the sharp, tearing pain in her lower abdomen. She crept silently toward the door, her bare feet making no sound against the cold tile. Pressing her ear to the polished wood, she strained to hear anything through the thick panels.

"Clear the room," a gruff, unfamiliar voice whispered from just outside.

"The boss said make it look like a natural arrest of breath," a second voice replied, chillingly calm and devoid of human warmth.

Panic clawed at Clara’s throat. These weren't doctors. They weren't Marcus’s guards either. They were professionals—clean-up operatives sent by Eleanor to finish what she had started in the mansion hallway. If they opened that door, she and her unborn child wouldn’t survive the night.

Desperation fueled her movements. Clara backed away from the door, scanning the dimly lit room for an escape route. The bathroom window was too small, leading to a sheer fifty-foot drop down to the alleyway. The main window was her only option, but it was locked with a heavy security latch that required a maintenance key.

Suddenly, the door handle began to turn. The brass knob rattled softly as someone tested the lock from the outside.

Clara grabbed the heavy metal IV pole from beside the bed, lifting it with both hands as her muscles strained under the effort. She positioned herself right beside the doorframe, holding her breath, praying that her trembling arms would have enough strength to deliver a decisive blow if the lock gave way.

Click.

The lock turned fully. The door began to push inward, a sliver of hallway light cutting across the dark floor. Clara raised the iron pole high above her head, her eyes wide with terror and resolve, ready to strike the moment an intruder crossed the threshold.

The door swung wide open, revealing not a hitman, but a terrified young nurse with blood smeared across her crisp white uniform, pointing frantically down the hall and screaming, "They got the guards! Get out of the window, now!"
