Chapter 3 - The Crimson Invitation

Marcus snatched the heavy cream envelope from the trembling orderly, his thumb breaking the crimson wax seal with practiced ease. He unfolded the thick parchment inside, his dark eyes scanning the bold, elegant handwriting. As he read, the temperature in the sterile hospital room seemed to drop ten degrees. The veins along his tattooed forearms pulsed with tightly coiled fury.
"What is it?" Clara asked, propping herself up on her elbows despite the dull ache in her abdomen. Her large, dark eyes scanned his rigid profile, searching for any sign of weakness. "Is it Eleanor? Is she threatening to go to the police?"
"Worse," Marcus muttered, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "She’s calling an emergency board meeting at the main estate for midnight. She claims there’s been a massive financial discrepancy in the foundation accounts—and she’s tied my name directly to it."
Clara’s breath hitched. The foundation was her domain; she had spent the last two years managing the charity ledgers as Marcus’s confidential assistant before Eleanor had forced her down into the housekeeping ranks under the guise of "remedial training." Clara knew every ledger entry, every hidden wire transfer, and every dirty secret the Sterling family had paid millions to bury.
"She’s setting a trap," Clara warned, her voice urgent. "She knows you’re at the hospital with me. She’s using the foundation audit as bait to draw you back into the house while she tears your office apart looking for proof about us."
Marcus stood up slowly, shrugging his dark suit jacket back onto his broad shoulders. He walked over to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked city streets below. The city lights blurred into a smear of gold and neon, reflecting the turbulent thoughts racing through his mind. He couldn’t afford to lose the board’s trust, not when a hostile takeover by the Vance family was already underway. But leaving Clara alone in this unprotected clinic felt like walking into the lions' den.
"I have to go," Marcus said, turning back to face her with a look of absolute determination. "I’ll leave two of my most trusted men outside the door. No one gets in. Not the nurses, not the doctors, and certainly not anyone carrying a Vance crest."
"Marcus, wait," Clara called out, her heart hammering against her ribs. She reached under her hospital pillow and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, pressing it into his palm. "If she’s looking for the financial discrepancies, this is the real audit. It contains the shell company records linking Eleanor’s personal accounts to the missing foundation funds. If she traps you, use this to destroy her before she destroys us."
Marcus closed his fingers tightly around the small piece of plastic, feeling the weight of the war they were about to wage. He leaned down, pressing a lingering, protective kiss to her forehead. "I'll be back before dawn. Lock the door and don't open it for anyone."
He slipped out into the hallway, the heavy door clicking shut behind him with a finality that made Clara’s skin crawl. She pulled the thin hospital blanket up to her chin, listening to the steady beep of the monitor as the minutes ticked by like hours.

Then, the monitor beep skipped a beat. The harsh fluorescent lights overhead flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire room into absolute darkness.
